A 4-Day Itinerary for Exploring Austin, Texas

We visited Austin late summer, and loved every minute of it from our stylist accommodations, to the friendly atmosphere and food. Follow a similar adventure to the one below or create your own from our recommendations. I highly suggest taking a tour on the first day the trip to get a lay of the land and note any special spots you may want to return to.

Austin, Texas, is a vibrant city known for its live music scene, unique culture, and outdoor activities. Whether you're a foodie, history buff, or nature lover, Austin has something for everyone. Here’s a detailed 4-day itinerary to help you make the most of your time in this lively city.

Day 1: Discovering Downtown Austin

Morning: Breakfast and City Tour

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Café No Sé or South Congress Café on South Congress Avenue, where you can enjoy some local favourites like avocado toast or breakfast tacos.

Afterward, head downtown for a guided city tour. Companies like Austin Detours offer excellent tours that cover key landmarks and neighbourhoods. You’ll visit the Texas State Capitol, one of the tallest state capitols in the U.S., where you can explore the historic building and grounds. The tour typically includes a drive around the city's iconic neighbourhoods, such as Rainey Street and the historic Sixth Street, known for its vibrant nightlife.

Afternoon: Lunch and Museums

After the tour, grab lunch at Franklin Barbecue for some of the best brisket in Texas (get there early, as lines can be long). Alternatively, head to Lamberts Downtown Barbecue for a more upscale BBQ experience.

Post-lunch, visit the Bullock Texas State History Museum to dive into Texas history, or explore the Blanton Museum of Art on the University of Texas campus, which houses a diverse collection of modern and contemporary art.

Evening: Dinner and Live Music

As the sun sets, make your way to Zilker Park to catch stunning views of the city skyline. Afterward, head to Rainey Street—a historic district transformed into a hub of bars and food trucks. Grab dinner at Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden and enjoy some live music, as Austin is known as the "Live Music Capital of the World."

Day 2: Outdoor Adventures and Local Culture

Morning: Barton Springs and Outdoor Activities

Start your day with a refreshing dip in Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed pool in Zilker Park. The pool maintains a cool 68-70°F year-round, making it perfect for a morning swim.

If you’re into hiking or biking, explore the Barton Creek Greenbelt nearby. The Greenbelt offers a variety of trails, from easy walks to more challenging hikes.

Afternoon: South Congress Avenue and Local Shopping

After your morning outdoors, head to South Congress Avenue (SoCo) for lunch at Home Slice Pizza or Guero’s Taco Bar. Spend the afternoon strolling through the eclectic mix of shops, from vintage boutiques to quirky gift stores. Don’t forget to snap a photo in front of the famous “I love you so much” mural!

Evening: Sunset at The Oasis

Drive out to The Oasis on Lake Travis for dinner. This iconic spot offers stunning sunset views over the lake, making it a perfect way to end your day. Enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine while watching the sun dip below the horizon.

Day 3: History, Art, and BBQ

Morning: Visit the LBJ Presidential Library

Start your day at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum on the University of Texas campus. This museum offers a deep dive into the life and legacy of the 36th President of the United States.

Afternoon: East Austin and BBQ

For lunch, head to East Austin, an area known for its street art and diverse food scene. Stop by La Barbecue or Micklethwait Craft Meats for some authentic Texas BBQ.

Afterward, explore the area’s vibrant street art scene, particularly around the HOPE Outdoor Gallery—an ever-changing canvas of murals and graffiti.

Evening: Dinner at Lamberts Downtown Barbecue and Entertainment at the Paramount Theatre

Lamberts Downtown Barbecue is a great spot for a slightly more upscale BBQ experience. Located in a historic building in downtown Austin, Lamberts offers a modern twist on traditional Texas BBQ with dishes like coffee-rubbed brisket and brown sugar & chili-rubbed pork ribs. The atmosphere is cozy yet lively, perfect for a relaxed yet refined dinner.

After dinner, walk over to the Paramount Theatre, a beautifully restored historic venue that hosts a variety of events, including live music, classic film screenings, comedy shows, and more. The theater’s vintage charm and diverse lineup make it a great place to soak in some of Austin’s vibrant cultural scene.

This combination of an upscale BBQ dinner and an evening of entertainment provides a memorable Austin experience, blending the city’s culinary and artistic highlights.

Day 4: Local Artisan Markets and Hill Country Day Trip

Morning: Explore Local Artisan Markets

Kick off your last day in Austin by visiting some of the city’s renowned artisan markets. The Austin Flea is a must-visit, featuring a rotating selection of local vendors selling handmade jewelry, art, vintage goods, and more. It’s held at various locations around the city, so check their schedule to find one near you.

If your visit coincides with the first Sunday of the month, don’t miss the Blue Genie Art Bazaar or the Handmade Austin Women’s Market. These markets showcase the work of local artists and makers, offering everything from ceramics to textiles. It's a great way to pick up unique souvenirs and support local artisans.

Afternoon: Day Trip to Hill Country

After exploring the markets, venture out of the city and explore the Texas Hill Country. Start with a visit to Hamilton Pool Preserve, a natural swimming hole with a stunning waterfall. Note that reservations are required, so plan ahead.

Afternoon: Wine Tasting in Driftwood

On your way back to Austin, stop by the Driftwood area for some wine tasting. Duchman Family Winery offers beautiful views and delicious wines. For lunch, enjoy a wood-fired pizza at Salt Lick BBQ, another Texas BBQ institution.

Evening: Farewell Dinner

Return to Austin for your final evening and have dinner at Uchi, one of the city’s most acclaimed sushi restaurants. If you prefer something more Texan, Matt's El Rancho serves up classic Tex-Mex in a lively atmosphere.

After dinner, take one last stroll around downtown or along the Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail to soak in the city’s atmosphere before you depart.

Conclusion

Austin offers a unique blend of outdoor activities, historical sites, cultural experiences, and local artisan markets. Over these four days, you'll get a taste of everything that makes this city special—from its legendary BBQ and live music to its beautiful parks, vibrant neighborhoods, and local craftsmanship.
