California Coast to Desert: A Family Travel Diary

Our trip from Los Angeles all the way to the desert was even more incredible than we had planned. We saw and did so much every day, it felt like five trips in one! However, we didn’t feel tired or overloaded with events and plans because it all went so smoothly. The weather was gorgeous – all the sunny days you would expect on a trip out west.

Below is a recap of what we ended up doing each day of our seven day adventure in California, spanning from Manhattan Beach, to Santa Monica, a few other key locations, and all the way to Joshua tree for a two nights stay in the desert.

Los Angeles Again but with Kids!

Earlier this year all of us went to Universal Studios and Disney World in Orlando, but we plan to surprise the kids again with the west coast version and at least take them to Universal Studios in Hollywood. The huge bonus is the Super Mario attraction at Universal which is a childhood favourite Nintendo game of mine, and also one of my eldest daughter’s.

Planning a trip to LA with kids has been totally different than the previous times we visited without them. No Beverly Hills clubs, Nobu dining in Malibu, or Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier past sunset on bicycle adventures. This time, we’ll be out during the day and hitting as many kid-friendly, exciting spots as we can.

I’ve narrowed down the list of items to pack for a 10 day trip in the fall to the essentials, but not excluding all items that will ensure our comfort for the duration of the trip and for any type of weather we may face.

How to decide which way to travel Ring Road in Iceland with kids (or without)

After booking the tickets, I decided to look into things to do in Iceland with kids, and my first choice to make was how we were going to tour Ring Road that goes around the perimeter of the entire island. This is a common way to travel through Iceland in about 10 days; the length of our trip. We’re flying into the international airport which is about 45 minutes from the capital city. From there we will drive to the capital city via cab, check into a hotel for the first night and pick up our rental vehicle the next day.
